Day 2 - Rhine to Koln

Today we drove along the Rhine to Koln (or Cologne). Along the way we saw lots and lots of castles. We stopped at the Kaub castle which is in the middle of the Rhine.

We stopped at the Loreley which is a statue of a lady. The legend goes that she would sing and thereby lure sailors toward the shore where they would crash and drown.

The track out to the Loreley statue was rough and piggy got chained up

We drove along the auto-bahn.

We caught a train into Koln and visited the cathedral - it was huge and kind of ugly, very gothic.

We had a pretzel. Went to an Italian restuarant for dinner and had pizza.

We stayed in a town called Langenfeld about 25km from Koln. Today was also hot (27) but rained in the evening as we were returning to Langenfeld.

Our accommodation was a bed and breakfast. Our room was huge with a kitchenette and a bidet in the bathroom.

The beds in Europe are intriguing, they are composed of 2 single mattresses pushed together and made up with separate sheets and separate quilts. Evidently they don't like to encourage snuggling. The pillows are also big, square and soft and the toilet paper is crunchy.

Castle overlooking a town

If a flag is flying over a castle it means that it is lived in by a family (a very rich one)

  1. European beds are great. It doesn't matter how fat you are, when you move about, your partner doesn't get disturbed or roll into you. Also, if you lose your divet, it's because you lost it not because they stole it.
The big square pillows are stupid, however.

  2. That should say duvet, of course.
